What is a Crossover SUV?

Whenever the topic of SUV crossovers comes up, there can be a little confusion as to what they are. Simply put the crossover SUV takes components from both station wagons and SUVs and combines them to create a crossover vehicle. Because these vehicle crossovers combine the best attributes of these seemingly disparate types of vehicles you are left with a small SUV that gives the driver the performance and space of an SUV while allowing the driver to take advantage of the fuel economy and small size of a station wagon. The best crossovers with a conventional engine can give you mileage similar to the best hybrid SUVs. But when you start looking at hybrid crossovers such as the Ford Escape, the mileage can compete with some hybrid cars!

If you are in the market for a new vehicle and want to consider a cross over SUV you'll notice that there are a lot to choose from. We review all the latest crossover SUVs so you will know what you're looking for when it's time to go car shopping.

Top Crossover SUVs

2012 Ford Escape Hybrid

34 / 31 MPG
2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine + permanent magnet motor =177 horsepower

Since the hybrid model of the Ford Escape was released, it has received a great deal of buzz in the hybrid SUV community for being the first hybrid SUV. Many car review institutions claim that it is not only the best mid size SUV but simple the best crossover SUV on the market today. With 177 horsepower, extremely high torque and an unheard of 34 MPG, this vehicle is ready for anything that you can throw at it. And what's even better is that your pocketbook wont be hurting if you should purchase it. From great looks to great performance, this is by far one of the best hybrid SUVs on the market. Lexus RX 450h

32 / 29 MPG
3.5-liter V-6 engine + Battery Powered Electric Motor = 295 horsepower

Looking for great looks and fantastic performance in your hybrid SUV? With the Lexus RX 450h there's no need to look any further. Since it was first launched in the United States in 2006, it has been a smash success. Over the past couple of years it has actually become more popular with consumers than the conventional RX 450. By Hybrid SUV standards, this thing produced a lot of horsepower. 295 horsepower with 234 feet pounds of torque is almost unheard of for a hybrid vehicle. But if you are willing to pay the Lexus price, it can all be yours. This is of course the major pitfall of the RX 450h. While hybrid drivers are used to higher prices, the 450h represents the ceiling of hybrid crossover SUVs. See the full review!

Toyota Highlander Hybrid Crossover

28 / 29 MPG
3.5-liter V-6 engine + electric motor = 231 horsepower

Since the Toyota Highlander was redesigned in 2008, it has quickly become one of the top crossovers on the market. The redesign gave the highlander a new body shape, interior space and engine that makes it more fuel efficient and more comfortable to drive. Due to the fact that it has a little less ground clearance than your traditional SUV, it is not the ideal vehicle for heavy off road situations, but can still take most of anything you throw at it. All in all this is a great car for the cost. See the full review!
